A routine patrol on Newport Road in Cwmbran escalated into a dramatic police pursuit, exposing multiple criminal activities and culminating in the arrest of three young suspects. Gwent Police officers identified a white Volkswagen Golf with suspected cloned plates during a midday patrol on April 17, prompting a chase that ended when the driver crashed the vehicle on the usually quiet thoroughfare.
Three individuals—aged 18, 19, and 20—attempted to flee the scene on foot but were swiftly apprehended by pursuing officers. The arrests included charges ranging from motor vehicle theft and drug possession to driving offenses, with additional allegations involving corrosive substances and offensive weapons.
The stolen Volkswagen Golf, missing its front bumper, was photographed surrounded by police vehicles near the collision site. Authorities confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident, though the suspects face a litany of legal consequences linked to their alleged crimes.
A Gwent Police spokesperson stated, “Officers on a patrol spotted a vehicle being driven on suspected cloned plates in the Cwmbran area at around 12.40pm on Thursday 17 April. The white Volkswagen Golf was involved in a road traffic collision on Newport Road, Cwmbran.”
The 20-year-old male suspect faces charges including dangerous driving, drug possession, and fraudulent use of registration documents, while the 19-year-old woman is accused of failing to stop for police and drug-related offenses. The 18-year-old woman was arrested for dangerous driving and motor vehicle theft, with all three remaining in custody as investigations continue.
Cloned plates have become a growing concern in South Wales, as evidenced by recent cases like the February arrest of a Cardiff man who used similar tactics to evade police on the M. The incident underscores the broader challenge of vehicle-related crimes in the region, where authorities continue to prioritize crackdowns on organized theft rings and drug-related offenses.
The spokesperson added, “There were no reports of any injuries. All three remain in police custody at this time as our enquiries continue.” Local residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as police intensify efforts to curb cloned plate usage and associated crimes.
