An inquest has revealed that Andrew Paul Hewitt, a 52-year-old HGV driver and long-time Chester FC supporter, took his own life shortly after police began investigating an alleged racist gesture he was involved in during a football match. Hewitt was found hanging at his home in Flint just hours after the incident at an away game against Warrington Town, where video footage surfaced online showing a small group of Chester fans making offensive gestures toward a Warrington player.

The footage prompted Chester FC to confirm that an individual had been identified and that police were conducting an investigation. Hewitt’s brother, Alan, described his brother’s actions as completely out of character and said, “Andrew got caught up in the moment.” He added that Hewitt likely read the club’s statement and online comments, fearing a possible ban or jail sentence, outcomes he “could not face the embarrassment of” either.

A note expressing remorse was found at Hewitt’s home on Palace Close, underscoring the depth of his distress. The inquest at County Hall in Ruthin heard that Hewitt was a dedicated fan who had followed Chester FC for over 40 years and was in a long-term relationship with Hayley Williams.

HM Coroner for North Wales, John Gittins, concluded the case with a verdict of suicide, offering condolences to the family and acknowledging the profound loss. He remarked, “It is a very tragic loss in very extreme, difficult circumstances,” and noted the significant void left by Hewitt’s passing.

This case highlights the intense personal impact that public allegations and social media scrutiny can have on individuals, especially in the context of sports and community identity. Research into the psychological effects of social stigma and public shaming shows that such pressures can lead to severe emotional distress, emphasizing the need for supportive interventions in similar situations.
