Newport to Glow with VE Day Commemorations
Newport is set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe, with a series of events on Thursday, May 8.
The day will begin with the raising of a unique VE Day flag outside the civic centre and culminate in the lighting of a beacon at Queen Elizabeth Field in Ringland.
The beacon event, commencing at 7:30 pm, will be hosted by Anthony Stuart-Lloyd, a former West End star, international opera singer, and presenter.
The evening’s entertainment will also feature musical performances from the Gwent Music Community Celtic Group, the Gwent Music Brass Ensemble, and the City of Newport Male Choir.
The VE Day beacon will be lit around 9:30 pm, followed by the lighting of the Lamp Light of Peace.
Queen Elizabeth II Field offers a vantage point to see beacons glowing across the Bristol Channel.
Newport joins over one thousand beacons and hundreds of Lamp Lights of Peace illuminating the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, representing the “light of peace” after the war.
Further details regarding official events can be found at www.ve80.com.
