Civil War Expert to Unpack “The Beefsteak Raid” at Pamplin Historical Park

Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier will host historian J. Michael Moore on May 1, 2025, at 7:00 pm, as part of the Petersburg Civil War Roundtable. Moore’s presentation will delve into the details of “The Beefsteak Raid,” a daring Confederate operation led by Major General Wade Hampton.

Moore, the curator and registrar for Lee Hall Mansion and Endview Plantation in Newport News, Virginia, will detail Hampton’s audacious raid that took place from September 14-17, 1864. The operation saw 3,000 Confederate cavalrymen venture 100 miles behind Union lines with the mission of capturing Union cattle to feed Confederate soldiers.

The success of the raid, which resulted in the capture of more than 2,000 cattle, even caught the attention of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who reportedly called it “the slickest piece of cattle-stealing” he had ever heard of.

With a Bachelor of Arts in History from Christopher Newport University and a Master of Arts in History from Old Dominion University, Moore brings extensive knowledge to the subject. He has curated exhibits at historic sites and led battlefield tours across multiple states. Moore also served on Civil War Sesquicentennial Committees and co-authored “Yorktown’s Civil War Siege: Drums Along the Warwick” and “The Peninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis” with Kevin Dougherty.

The Petersburg Civil War Roundtable (PCWRT) meets at Pamplin Historical Park on the first Thursday of each month from September to May (excluding June, July, and August) from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
