An elderly dog in a Welsh town centre was attacked by a dog known locally for roaming the streets unattended. Mickey, an 18-year-old Bichon Frise, suffered serious puncture wounds and required several visits to the vet after an off-lead dog suddenly appeared and grabbed him. The incident left Mickey shaken and injured, with some wounds still weeping more than a week later.

Locals say this is not the first time the Shar Pei-type dog has tried to attack Mickey or other dogs in Porth town centre. Police responded to the scene near Hannah Street in Rhondda Cynon Taf shortly after the attack, and the dog has since been returned to its owner. Despite this, concerns remain about the dog being frequently let out unsupervised and escaping unnoticed.

Mickey’s owner, Andrea Griffiths, described the terrifying moment: “I was just taking my dog out and had only just left my flat, when out of nowhere the dog came over and grabbed Mickey. It was growling and scraping its paws. I was in complete shock.” She added that the dog had previously tried to attack Mickey just days before, and a passerby had to intervene to protect her.

Andrea expressed her fear of walking Mickey due to the dog roaming freely and said, “Lots of people have complained but nothing has been done about it. I’m scared to take my dog for a walk. I just want the police to do something about the dog. It’s not being looked after and it keeps going for other dogs.”

South Wales Police confirmed they were called to the incident and stated, “No arrests have been made and being that this was a dog-on-dog attack it is now a civil matter.” They urged the public to report any dog attacks to ensure safety and proper investigation, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance in protecting both people and animals in public spaces.
