Mid and West Wales Fire Crews Join Historic Aid Convoy to Ukraine
The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) has contributed to the UK’s largest-ever emergency aid convoy, delivering critical firefighting resources to Ukrainian first responders facing devastating losses in the ongoing conflict.
The April 2025 mission, coordinated by FIRE AID and backed by His Majesty’s Government, saw 18 UK fire services collaborate to send over 30 vehicles and 15,000 items of gear—including hoses, protective equipment, and rescue tools—to replenish Ukraine’s decimated emergency infrastructure.
Convoy Details and Impact
The fleet, traversing France, Germany, and Poland, adds to the 119 vehicles and 200,000+ pieces of equipment donated since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
MAWWFRS ensured local safety needs were met before donating surplus resources, emphasizing a balance between domestic preparedness and international solidarity.
Firsthand Perspectives
Watch Manager Rob Kershaw, representing MAWWFRS, described the journey as a “privilege,” praising cross-border assistance from European emergency services. Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas highlighted the UK’s sustained commitment, stating, “The events in Ukraine have resonated across our community—this effort underscores our resolve to support colleagues risking everything to save lives”.
Ukraine’s Emergency Crisis
Ukrainian firefighters operate under extreme peril, with 100 killed, 431 injured, and 411 stations destroyed since the war began.
The donated equipment aims to mitigate losses exceeding 1,700 fire vehicles, enabling life-saving operations without combat involvement.
