A violent altercation erupted on a train traveling between Bristol and Newport, Wales, when two teenagers were attacked, leaving one unconscious. The teenagers were traveling with friends when William Loosley and Jasmine Brine, seated a few rows behind, became involved in a confrontation. CCTV footage revealed that Brine threw her lipstick at one of the teens, who then returned the gesture, sparking the conflict.

Brine, 31, reacted angrily and grabbed the teenage girl’s head, prompting a teenage boy to step in and try to separate them. The situation escalated when Loosley, 39, approached quickly and restrained the girl while punching the boy multiple times. One punch was so forceful it caused the boy to lose consciousness, after which Loosley and Brine walked away but continued verbally abusing the group until the train reached Newport.

The British Transport Police were alerted, and both suspects were arrested the next day on suspicion of assault. Loosley pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and received a ten-month prison sentence, to be served half in custody and half on licence. Brine admitted one count of assault and was given a 12-month community order, including 100 hours of unpaid work, a 90-day abstinence order, and court and victim costs totaling £364.

Detective Constable Liam Perry condemned the behavior, stating, “Violent, threatening, or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated on the railway network. Every person has the right to travel in safety and comfort, and no one should be subjected to such awful alarming and distressing behaviour as the victims did.” He described the attack as “vile and unprovoked” and expressed hope that Loosley’s prison term would encourage reflection on his actions and their consequences.
