In a powerful show of unity, Ysgol Bryn Alyn (YBA) in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, marked ‘Wear Red Day’ on October 18 to support the UK’s leading anti-racism campaign, Show Racism the Red Card. Staff and students dressed in red as a symbol of their commitment to raising awareness about racism and promoting inclusivity.

The initiative was led by YBA’s student group, Leaders of Now, who organized the non-uniform day to engage the school in meaningful conversations about discrimination. Red pin badges were available for students to purchase at the entrance, further emphasizing their support for the cause.

Throughout the day, staff and students participated in unique activities organized by each faculty, all centering on themes of anti-racism. The Expressive Arts department explored media portrayals of black individuals and how these representations affect societal attitudes, while the Achievement Centre focused on the historical Soweto Uprising of 1976. This peaceful protest by South African students against apartheid highlighted the ongoing importance of solidarity in the face of racial injustice, sparking discussion on progress made and the work still needed.

Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Ebrey expressed her pride in the students’ commitment to the event, stating, “It’s inspiring to see how our students have embraced this campaign. Their participation reflects Ysgol Bryn Alyn’s dedication to values of inclusivity and respect.”

The school’s efforts underscored its message of unity, with students and staff alike championing equality and inclusivity in their community.
