Tom Russell, a dedicated stoma nurse at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, has established Three Bags Full, a volunteer-led support group for individuals in north-east Wales living with a stoma or preparing for stoma surgery. Stomas, small openings created in the abdomen to allow waste to exit the body, require substantial physical and emotional adjustment. Russell observed that his patients often felt isolated in their experiences and realized that a supportive community could make a world of difference.

“The need for a group like this was widely requested by patients living in the area, as previous to this the nearest stoma group was in Oswestry,” Russell explained. The newly founded group meets monthly at Mold Rugby Club and provides a welcoming space for stoma patients to connect, share experiences, and gain valuable information.

At the first meeting, which attracted around 25 people, discussions spanned a variety of topics, both related to living with a stoma and general life challenges. The atmosphere was inclusive and supportive, allowing attendees to speak openly about their experiences and ask questions among peers who understand the day-to-day realities of living with a stoma.

“We want the meetings to be a safe space where individuals can find understanding and support,” said Russell. “It’s a chance for stoma patients to come together, learn, and build friendships.”

The group plans to invite health professionals such as dieticians and physiotherapists to future sessions, offering participants access to expert advice on managing dietary needs, staying active, and other concerns unique to stoma patients. “We’re aiming to provide both emotional and practical support,” Russell added, “so that everyone attending can feel empowered in their health journey.”

Three Bags Full meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in Mold, and the door is open to anyone with a stoma or those who are preparing for stoma surgery. Through this initiative, Russell hopes to foster a robust support network that will continue to grow, reaching even more people across the region who need it.

For individuals who feel alone in their health journey, Three Bags Full is a place of compassion, community, and shared resilience.
