M&S has confirmed that customers across the UK are currently unable to place online orders after a cyber attack disrupted their systems earlier this week. The retailer stated they are working “extremely hard” to resolve the issue that has affected their stores throughout the week. Despite the challenges, M&S emphasized that their physical stores remain open for business.
The problems began last weekend, with the company officially declaring a “cyber incident” on Tuesday. Since then, M&S has paused all online orders for both food and clothing through their website and apps, as recovery efforts continue. Customers have been informed that while they can still browse the product range online, gift cards, e-gift cards, and credit receipts cannot be used for payment either in-store or online at this time.
In a message posted on X, M&S explained: “As part of our proactive management of a cyber incident, we have made the decision to pause taking orders via our M&S.com websites and apps. Our product range remains available to browse online. We are truly sorry for this inconvenience. Our stores are open to welcome customers.” They also reassured shoppers that no action is needed from them currently, and updates will be provided if the situation changes. The company expressed gratitude to customers, colleagues, and partners for their understanding and support during this period.
Following the announcement, M&S shares dropped by 5%, and many customers turned to social media seeking clarity about their orders. One customer questioned on X: “Are there any timescales for this to be resolved? What am I not able to collect items that I know are in the store waiting for me. Surely you would have a business continuity plan for such issues. Not having a service is not a good enough plan.” Another asked, “I have an order due to be available for click and collect tomorrow that is really important I can get – will it still be delivered to the store on time?”
M&S has reassured customers that any click and collect orders already arrived in stores should not be affected and that all parcels will be held in-store until further notice. Earlier in the week, the retailer also had to suspend contactless payments and experienced disruptions with Click and Collect services as a direct result of the cyber incident.
