Dave Reddin has been appointed as the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) new director of rugby and elite performance, following the resignation of Nigel Walker in December 2024. Reddin brings extensive experience from his previous roles as a performance expert with England Rugby, the Football Association, and Team GB, having worked alongside notable figures such as Sir Gareth Southgate and Sir Clive Woodward.

One of Reddin’s immediate priorities will be to help appoint a permanent head coach for the Wales men’s team to replace Warren Gatland, who stepped down amid a record 17 consecutive Test losses. Steve Tandy, currently Scotland’s defence coach, is reportedly the leading candidate for this role, though negotiations and compensation with the Scottish Rugby Union may delay his appointment.

The Welsh men’s team is currently enduring their longest losing streak, while the women’s team has also struggled, losing all four of their matches in the 2025 Guinness Women’s Six Nations, with their final game against Italy upcoming.

Reddin expressed his honor and enthusiasm for joining Welsh rugby at such a critical time, acknowledging the passion for rugby in Wales and the challenges ahead. He is inspired by the new vision and strategy set by the WRU and aims to make positive changes quickly, with a focus on both men’s and women’s rugby, including overseeing the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup in England this summer.
