Significant sections of the M4 motorway in Wales will experience partial or full closures this week as essential resurfacing works are underway. Although most of these works are scheduled overnight, some motorists may still face disruptions during their journeys.

Key routes impacted include the Prince of Wales Bridge in both directions, along with areas around Llandarcy, Margam, and Earlswood. These closures are part of a broader effort to maintain and improve road safety and surface quality, with drivers advised to plan for additional travel time due to the ongoing works.

At junction 43 in Llandarcy, the eastbound entry slip will be closed nightly from 8 pm to 6 am between April 8 and May 11, with diversions clearly marked. Similarly, the eastbound entry slip at junction 42 in Earlswood will be closed during the same hours and dates to facilitate resurfacing activities.

Westbound closures include the section at junction 38 near Margam, which will be fully closed overnight from April 25 to April 29, with alternative routes provided. The Prince of Wales Bridge between junctions 22 (Pilning) and 23 (Rogiet) will undergo overnight closures for resurfacing from April 27 to May 1, followed by full closures in both directions on May 1 and eastbound only on May 2.

The Prince of Wales Bridge resurfacing project is a significant undertaking, aiming to extend the lifespan of the bridge’s road surface and enhance driving conditions. Last year, unexpected damage near the central reservation required complex repairs, which have now been completed to ensure the bridge’s safety for all users.

To complete the resurfacing, several overnight closures and contraflow systems are being implemented, with a 40mph speed limit enforced across the bridge during these phases. A well-signposted diversion via the M48 Severn Bridge is in place to assist drivers during full closures, and all restrictions are expected to be lifted by autumn 2025.
