Welsh Independence Support Grows: Thousands March in Barry.

More than 6,000 people marched for Welsh independence in Barry on Saturday.

YesCymru and AUOBCymru organized the march. It was called “a powerful show of unity.” The march sought “a better future”.

Marches have occurred across Wales since 2019. Locations included Caernarfon, Merthyr, and Cardiff.

Barry is Wales’ largest town. It has a significant political legacy.

The march ended with a rally in King Square. Speakers included Leanne Wood and Anna Arqué i Solsona. Kiera Marshall and Tessa Marshall also spoke. Singer Eädyth Crawford performed.

Councillor Mark Hooper was the MC. All speakers/performers were women, except the MC. This was a first for the march.

Kiera Marshall stated, “How can we afford not to be independent?”

She added, “The UK system keeps us poor. Our children go hungry.”

Leanne Wood said, “It’s time to end our dependence.”

She added, “We can build an alternative.” The current model “serves the City of London” and leaves “crumbs for communities in Wales.”

A poll commissioned by YesCymru showed 41% of decided voters support independence. Among 25 to 34-year-olds, that figure is 72%.

YesCymru chair Phyl Griffiths stated, “What we’ve seen today in Barry is a reflection of the mood across Wales.”

Griffiths added, “People are ready for change. Independence is no longer a fringe idea.” It is “a serious, hopeful response to a broken system.”
