The mother of Amanda Blake, a former North Wales woman found dead outside her apartment in Australia, has expressed heartfelt thanks for the public’s generosity, which allowed her daughter to be brought home for burial.

Amanda, aged 38, was discovered beneath a balcony at her Sydney suburb residence on September 25, 2022. She had lived in Australia since 2011, working in hospitality, and kept in regular contact with her family, though she never shared the full extent of her mental health struggles.

At the inquest, Amanda’s mother, Pamela Blake from Hawarden, revealed that the family only learned after Amanda’s death about reports of domestic violence and her ongoing battle with alcohol. Pamela described Amanda’s boyfriend as “controlling” and said he took advantage of her vulnerability. New South Wales Police confirmed five recorded domestic violence incidents involving the couple, though no charges were filed.

Amanda had become an Australian citizen and wished to remain there. A post-mortem found her blood alcohol level was 373 milligrammes per 100 millilitres. The inquest was held in North Wales after Amanda was repatriated to Hawarden for burial, thanks to £15,000 raised by her family.

Senior coroner John Gittins recorded a conclusion of suicide.

In tribute, Pamela remembered Amanda as a sociable, positive person with many friends in both the UK and Australia, who was always smiling and the life of any gathering. She thanked everyone who contributed to bringing Amanda home to her final resting place in Flintshire.
