Arthur Okonkwo has been instrumental in Wrexham’s historic promotion to the Championship. The 23-year-old goalkeeper helped secure automatic promotion with a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
Wrexham finished second in League One, five points clear of third place with one game remaining. Okonkwo kept a clean sheet in the crucial victory, adding to his impressive tally of 19 clean sheets in 36 games this season.
His campaign was briefly interrupted by a wrist fracture in November, sidelining him for over a month. After returning, Okonkwo initially struggled for form and spent some time on the bench in February.
However, he bounced back strongly, winning the Fans’ League One Player of the Month award for March. “In March, I kept six clean sheets in seven games,” Okonkwo said, highlighting his vital contribution.
Wrexham only moved into the automatic promotion places in April, after spending much of the season in third or fourth. With one final game away to Lincoln City, the club now focuses on preparing for the Championship.
This promotion marks Wrexham’s third consecutive rise under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, a remarkable achievement.
Manager Phil Parkinson said, “We will take the Championship full-on, just as we have done in recent years.” He added, “It is going to be a huge challenge. We will recruit the right players and enjoy the ride.”
Okonkwo’s resilience and performances have been central to Wrexham’s success this season. The club and fans now look forward to testing themselves in the second tier of English football.
