A significant investment of £110 million has been announced by the Welsh Government to enhance transport infrastructure in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot, focusing on road projects, active travel routes, and the development of a new transport hub.

This funding aims to make travel easier for residents while supporting local economies through improved transport links. The announcement highlights a commitment to upgrading local roads, mitigating weather-related disruptions, piloting new bus services, and expanding electric vehicle charging points.

The funding will also prioritize safer routes for children traveling to school and the creation of inclusive streets designed to facilitate walking, wheeling, and cycling. In Bridgend, the active travel fund includes £707,000 of core funding and an additional £119,000 for the Pen y Fai project, which will upgrade a shared pedestrian and cycle path along Tondu Road connecting to Bridgend town centre.

Local transport improvements feature £226,000 for information displays at Bridgend Bus Station, while road resilience efforts allocate £357,000 for the A4061 junction 36 to Heol Canola Sarn and £137,000 for A4064 King Edward Street.

Road safety measures in Bridgend will see £208,689 directed toward implementing a 20mph speed limit and £29,636 for Kerbcraft pedestrian training. In Neath Port Talbot, the active travel fund includes £716,000 in core funding and £990,000 for the Neath to Cilma active travel route. Local transport enhancements include £730,000 for Cymmer carriageway improvements and £440,000 for the proposed Neath Integrated Transport Hub in the town centre.

Significant road safety investments in Neath Port Talbot include £890,000 for the A4241 Harbourway to Rutherglen, £220,000 for B4242 Ynysygerwn to Glynneath, and £14,000 for Dragon Rider motorcycle training. Additionally, £1.6 million is allocated for highway drainage works at the A483 Fabian Way to address frequent flooding on this key access road.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “Connecting communities and delivering better transport for all is at the heart of this £110m investment.”
He added, “We want to make it easier for people to travel to work, school, healthcare and to see friends and family, while also building a more sustainable transport network for future generations.” This comprehensive funding package reflects a strategic effort to improve transport accessibility, safety, and sustainability across the region.
