As the 2025 North Wales Cricket League season approaches, clubs across the region are preparing for a competitive campaign, with teams eager to build on last year’s performances.
Gwersyllt Park, entering their second season in the Premier Division, have taken an unusual but effective approach to pre-season preparations. Captain Jamie Griffiths, who has recently rejoined the club, revealed that the team spent four days training in Portugal. “It’s been really good for myself to get to know the players in the team,” Griffiths said. “It was a case of getting to know one another. It was really good and we can always share that.”
After a strong debut season finishing eighth and comfortably avoiding relegation, Griffiths highlighted the hard work behind the scenes, including the new pavilion, and stressed the team’s focus on taking the season one game at a time. “There’s a real good buzz about the place. We are really excited – we will take one step at a time and we can’t wait to get going.”
Northop, who finished fifth last season just seven points shy of a top-three spot, are aiming for a strong start against Gwersyllt Park. Captain Bart Ryan-Beswick expressed confidence in his squad’s depth: “I fancy us to batter them. I think we have got a very good bowling line-up, but we bat deep as well.” Ryan-Beswick also noted that North Wales teams have been successful in pre-season friendlies against Cheshire sides, and while Bangor have recruited well, Northop have added two promising players despite losing some firepower from last year.
Brymbo, who secured third place last season, face a challenging opener against reigning champions Mochdre. Captain Dan Parry said, “We normally get one of the big boys first up. It’s no warm-up game. You’re better off catching them cold.” Parry emphasized the squad’s consistency and desire to improve on last year’s performance, hoping for a bit of luck to push them further up the table.
Promoted sides Bethesda and Conwy will both start their campaigns at home, with Bethesda hosting last season’s runners-up St Asaph, and Conwy facing Denbigh. Meanwhile, Menai Bridge travel to Bangor in the remaining fixture.
With the Premier Division title race expected to be fiercely contested—Mochdre are joint favourites to retain their crown—this season promises exciting cricket action across North Wales. Clubs and players are ready and eager to get underway, setting the stage for a thrilling summer of cricket.
