A prominent restaurant in Abergavenny, Fork and Fire, has announced it will remain “closed for the foreseeable future” after a significant fire broke out on Friday night, April 18, drawing a swift response from emergency services.

The incident, which occurred on Brecon Road near Nevill Hall Hospital, saw dramatic scenes as thick smoke poured from the building, prompting Gwent Police to urge local residents to keep their doors and windows shut while fire crews worked to control the situation.

Social media quickly filled with images of the blaze, capturing the concern of the community as the popular eatery, which had earned a 3.8 rating on OpenTable and a devoted local following since its 2023 opening, faced an uncertain future.

In a statement released on Monday, April 21, the Fork and Fire team described the aftermath as “turbulent,” confirming they had finally been able to assess the “true extent of the damage” and would need several days to determine if the business remained “viable” moving forward.

“To all of our customers, after what has been a turbulent weekend, we wanted to keep our customers updated.
We have been able to enter the restaurant to assess the true extent of the damage caused by the fire on Friday.
Unfortunately this does mean that we will be closed for the foreseeable future until we are able to make a decision about the future of Fire & Fork at Y Cantref. We will be taking the next few days to assess our options and if the business is viable moving forward. As a team, since launching Fire & Fork in 2023, we have poured our hearts into this business and built a community of loyal customers who we have been lucky to serve. While we take this time to reflect on the damage and to put together the next plan of attack, we will continue to update you via our social media pages. Keeping positive, Steve and the team.”

The origin of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine the cause, and the full scale of the damage is still being evaluated.

Fork and Fire had quickly become a fixture in Abergavenny’s culinary scene, praised for its atmosphere and service, and its closure marks a blow to the local hospitality sector, which, according to UKHospitality, has seen a 10% reduction in independent restaurants since 2020 due to various challenges.

As the community awaits further updates, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and support local businesses affected by such incidents, highlighting the resilience and solidarity that often emerges in the face of adversity.
