Coronation Street has lost one of its original stars as Philip Lowrie, known for his portrayal of Dennis Tanner, has passed away at the age of 88. The news was confirmed by his publicist, Mario Renzullo, who stated, “My client and very dear friend, Philip Lowrie, the beloved actor renowned for his role as Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, passed away yesterday at 88.”

Renzullo added, “His death marks the end of an era for the world’s longest-running soap, where he became a cornerstone of its storytelling.”

Lowrie first appeared on Coronation Street in 1960 at the age of 24, taking on the role of Dennis Tanner, the son of Elsie Tanner and husband Arnold, and quickly became one of the show’s early heartthrobs. He remained with the series for eight years before departing in 1968, but made a memorable return in 2011, earning a Guinness World Record for the longest gap between television appearances as the same character in the same show.

Throughout his career, Lowrie’s versatility shone through with work ranging from voiceovers for Channel 4’s Fifteen to One to roles in dramas such as Crown Court, The Cuckoo Waltz, The Liver Birds, and Doctors.

His legacy extends beyond television, with appearances in Victoria Wood’s programs and leading stage roles including Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap, Klever in The Case of the Frightened Lady, and Eric in The Lady Vanishes. Lowrie’s impact on British television and theatre is remembered fondly by colleagues and fans alike, who celebrate his remarkable contributions and the unique spirit he brought to every performance.
