Greggs is set to bring its popular bakery offerings to Ystrad Mynach with plans to open a new store in the town centre. The bakery giant has applied for planning permission to transform the former Lloyds bank premises at 15 Bedwlwyn Road into a vibrant new outlet.
According to documents submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council, the proposed store will generate employment opportunities, creating one full-time and 13 part-time positions. If approved, the bakery’s opening hours would be from 5.30am to 7pm Monday through Saturday, and 8am to 4pm on Sundays.
A design statement from JMS Planning and Development reveals that half of the building will serve as “back of house” space, including food preparation areas, storage, staff toilets, and changing rooms. The front section will feature seating for approximately 29 customers, toilets, and the usual serving counters.
The agents supporting the application highlighted Greggs’ commitment to sustainability and community welfare, noting its efforts to reduce food waste and support children’s nutrition. They stated: “The proposed Greggs bakery is considered to offer a beneficial service to the shoppers, workers and staff of the area by providing an accessible, attractive and affordable bakery bringing lunching opportunities on site.”
The former Lloyds bank branch closed in 2022 due to declining customer use, leaving the premises vacant until now. The planning application is currently open for public consultation and can be reviewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 25/0224/COU.
