A man has been sentenced to prison after he deliberately ordered a fridge freezer to be delivered to a woman’s home, violating a restraining order that barred him from contacting her. The woman described the ordeal as making her life “hell,” highlighting the ongoing distress caused by his actions. Benjamin Sergeant, 53, had been prohibited from any contact with the victim for two years following repeated attempts to reach her through texts, calls, and other intrusive behaviors.
During a hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, it was revealed that Sergeant placed the order for the fridge freezer from a shop in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, falsely claiming it was for his girlfriend and providing the victim’s address for delivery. The appliance arrived at the woman’s home on January 3, prompting her to question the delivery man about the purchaser. Upon showing a photo of Sergeant, it was confirmed he had made the purchase, leading to a police report and the discovery that he had breached the restraining order.
Sergeant, who resides in Wyeside Gardens, Hay-on-Wye, pleaded guilty to harassment and breaching the restraining order. The victim’s personal statement to the court expressed the toll the situation had taken, saying, “The last 18 months have been hell. His behaviour has affected me every day.”
Sergeant has two prior convictions for similar breaches, and the court learned he has schizophrenia and was hearing voices, which affected his understanding of the consequences of his actions. Recorder David Harris sentenced him to 20 months in prison and extended the restraining order to continue protecting the victim.
