A significant demonstration for Welsh independence is set to take place in Barry this weekend, drawing thousands of participants. The event is organised by YesCymru and AUOBCymru, groups that have been coordinating marches across Wales since 2019. Previous marches have been held in locations such as Caernarfon, Merthyr Tydfil, Wrexham, Bangor, Swansea, Carmarthen, and Cardiff.

A comparable march in Cardiff in 2022 attracted over 10,000 people, and organisers expect a similar turnout in the Vale of Glamorgan on Saturday. Barry is chosen as the venue due to its historical importance in the Cymru Fydd – Young Wales – movement of the 1890s, which championed Welsh home rule and self-governance. This march follows a Redfield & Wilton poll commissioned by YesCymru, revealing growing support for independence.

The poll indicates that 41% of decided voters in Wales would now back independence, with support among 25 to 34 year olds reaching 72%, highlighting the movement’s increasing appeal to younger generations. Local councillor and march organiser Mark Hooper remarked that the “thirst for self-determination” in Wales “remains as strong as ever.” He added, “It’s crucial we honour our past while advocating for a future that reflects our values and priorities.”

YesCymru chair Phyl Griffiths commented, “The latest poll results on Welsh independence are a clear sign that support for Welsh independence is growing, along with the demand for real change.” She emphasised that “real change isn’t about populism. Populism feeds on frustration and fosters division.” Griffiths expressed pride in Wales’ achievements across various fields and said, “I look forward to joining people from all over Wales in Barry for a vibrant, positive march for independence.”

Supporters will assemble at King Square from 11am, with the march commencing at 1pm. After the march, a rally will take place in King Square featuring speeches and live music. The event will include speakers such as former Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood, Catalan independence campaigner Anna Arqué i Solsona, Plaid Cymru’s Kiera Marshall, Green Party’s Tessa Marshall, and singer-songwriter Eädyth Crawford.

Local councillor Mark Hooper will host the rally, with musical performances by Emma Winter, known from Y Llais, the Welsh version of The Voice. Anna Arqué i Solsona, spokesperson for the International Commission of European Citizens (ICEC) from Catalonia, will bring an international perspective to the event. She will be joined by video messages of support from members of the ICEC, sharing solidarity from independence movements across Europe.
