Joanna Wronska, a 52-year-old woman from Pentre Gwyn in Caia Park, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years for the murder of her partner, Marcin Koziol, by inflicting a single fatal stab wound to his heart.
On October 23, 2023, shortly before 6:15 PM, Wronska called the police, claiming Marcin Koziol had a knife. When officers arrived at their home, they found Marcin lying in bed with a large stab wound to his chest, but no knife was present in the room. Despite efforts by paramedics, Marcin could not be saved.
Wronska claimed the couple had been home alone, and she found him covered in blood, asking her to call an ambulance, insisting nothing had happened prior to the incident.
Following a search of the house, police discovered a clean knife in the kitchen sink, matching the measurements of Marcin’s injury. Crime scene investigators found traces of blood around the bathroom sink and taps, where Wronska was seen wiping her hands upon police arrival. Wronska was arrested that evening on suspicion of murder.
During a nine-day trial at Mold Crown Court, Wronska maintained that Marcin had stabbed himself in a suicide attempt. However, the pathologist raised concerns about how a right-handed man could inflict such a wound at an unusual angle with extreme force, fracturing three ribs and completely severing one.
The jury, after less than 90 minutes of deliberations, convicted her of murder, rejecting her claims.
It is believed Wronska, in a drunken temper, took the knife and stabbed her partner. Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas described the attack as “cruel and violent” on a man who had sought support from Wronska, whom she claimed to love deeply.
Wronska went to great lengths to conceal her crime, deceiving police by claiming Marcin had killed himself, causing significant trauma to his family. Some family members endured the ordeal of giving evidence and listening to her lies throughout the trial.
Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas praised the investigation team’s thorough and diligent work, which helped the jury see through Wronska’s deception and secure justice for Marcin’s loved ones.
On the day of sentencing, Wronska was jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years. Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas expressed hope that the conviction would bring some respite to Marcin’s family, acknowledging the first responders who tried to save his life. She noted that the motive behind Wronska’s actions may never be fully known.
