A lorry fire on the M1 southbound in Derbyshire caused significant delays on Saturday morning, disrupting traffic between junction 29 for Chesterfield and junction 28 at Mansfield.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6:00 BST, with crews from Chesterfield and Ashfield fire stations, supported by a water carrier from Clay Cross, working swiftly to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was brought under control by approximately 6:40 BST, allowing one lane to reopen and traffic to begin moving again. The driver of the lorry was unharmed, according to National Highways.

Firefighters left the scene around 7:25 BST, but motorists were warned to expect ongoing delays as two lanes remained closed to facilitate the recovery of the damaged vehicle.

By midday, only one lane was still closed due to damage to the road surface caused by the fire. National Highways confirmed that repair work would be carried out overnight, with the motorway not expected to fully reopen until Sunday.

Drivers were thanked for their patience throughout the incident, with authorities advising motorists to allow extra time for their journeys as recovery and repair operations continued.
