Patients and visitors to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor are being urged to plan for significant delays as roadworks near the hospital are set to begin on Tuesday, 22 April, lasting approximately 10 weeks.
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) has warned that the works, located between the Ysbyty Gwynedd roundabout and Ffordd Cae Cilmelyn, will disrupt traffic flow, with temporary lights and increased congestion expected.
Paul Andrew, Integrated Health Community Director of Operations for West BCUHB, stressed: “We advise all patients and visitors to allow extra travel time to ensure appointments are not missed. These delays are unavoidable, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation.”
The project forms part of the Penrhos Road Active Travel Scheme, led by Cyngor Gwynedd, to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. Traffic management will operate 24/7 Monday to Friday, with manually controlled lights between 7:30 AM and 8:00 PM. Weekend work is not currently planned, though temporary measures could mirror weekday arrangements if required.
The health board emphasized that the upgrades aim to enhance sustainable travel but acknowledged the short-term impact on hospital access. Patients are advised to monitor updates from Cyngor Gwynedd’s weekly roadworks map1, which is refreshed every Friday.
