Netflix has confirmed that the beloved series Heartstopper will not return for a fourth season but will instead wrap up its story with a feature film. Based on Alice Oseman’s acclaimed graphic novels, the show quickly became a favorite among LGBTQIA+ audiences, following the journey of Charlie, a gay teen, and his boyfriend Nick, who comes out as bisexual during the series.
Directed by Euros Lyn in its early seasons and Andy Newbury in the third, the show’s finale will bring back Kit Connor as Nick and Joe Locke as Charlie, who will also serve as executive producers for the film.
Alice Oseman, the creator, executive producer, and original author, will pen the script for the movie, which will be directed by Wash Westmoreland, known for Still Alice. Sharing the news on Instagram, Oseman said: “We are making a feature film to conclude the Heartstopper screen adaptation, based on Heartstopper Volume 6 and the ‘Nick and Charlie’ novella.”
Oseman added: “We are getting to tell the end of the story!!! I’m deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture. I’ve written the script and we’re hard at work already. I know you’ll have a lot of questions, and I’ll be able to talk about it more very soon, but for now let’s CELEBRATE! Heartstopper is getting its ending!!!!!!”
The movie will pick up where the third season left off, focusing on Nick, Charlie, and their friends as they face new challenges in their relationships and personal growth. As Nick prepares for university and Charlie gains more independence at school, the couple must confront the realities of a long-distance relationship and the doubts that come with it. Fans can expect to see their favorite characters return for this final chapter, with the film promising to explore whether first love can endure the pressures of growing up and moving forward.
On social media, reactions have been mixed but passionate. One fan wrote: “i’m like heartbroken but also so incredibly happy at the same time.” Another said: “Ahhh, this is such lovely news. So happy we’ll get a proper goodbye.” However, some expressed disappointment about the lack of a fourth season, with one remarking: “im so sad we’re not getting the final season tho 🙁 you guys deserved it so bad. but im happy we’re getting something to conclude the story!!!”
