Finding affordable flights can be a straightforward task when armed with the right strategies, according to Ryan Pearson, Regional Manager for the UK and Ireland at Booking.com. His expert tips reveal that flexibility and timing are key factors in securing budget-friendly airfares, a notion supported by practical examples uncovered through a brief search on Booking.com.
By focusing on mid-week departures and returns about a month apart, flights to popular European cities like Rome, Barcelona, and Bucharest were found for under £60, illustrating the potential savings available to savvy travelers. However, these low fares often come with trade-offs such as early morning or late-night flights and limited baggage allowances, which could add to overall travel costs depending on individual circumstances.
Pearson emphasizes that while not everyone, especially families, may have the luxury to adjust travel dates, those with flexible schedules can capitalize on these deals. He advises exploring loyalty programs, bundling options, and comparing prices across multiple airports to maximize savings, noting that regional airports can sometimes offer cheaper and more convenient alternatives to major hubs.
“While flight prices can fluctuate throughout the year, for travellers looking for a good deal, it’s helpful to keep timing in mind. It can be best to get in there early to secure your travel date and lock in a good price, however there are often last minute deals a month before departure date,” Pearson explained. He also recommends mid-week flights, as these tend to have less demand and therefore lower prices.
Booking.com highlights that no single day of the week guarantees the cheapest flights because airlines use dynamic pricing based on customer demand. Pearson suggests using tools like Booking.com’s Flight Alerts, which notify Genius loyalty members of price changes or better deals on alternative dates within a three-day window, helping travelers book at the optimal time.
Special deals and promotional sales such as Black Friday and January Sales are also worth monitoring, as they can offer significant discounts on flights. Pearson further encourages travelers to consider off-the-beaten-path destinations and shoulder seasons, which not only reduce costs but also provide a more authentic travel experience, citing examples like Luang Prabang instead of Bangkok or Albania’s Ksamil over Santorini.
Joining loyalty programs like Booking.com’s Genius Loyalty Programme can unlock exclusive discounts and perks, enhancing the value of bookings. Pearson’s insights align with broader industry research showing that flexible travel planning, strategic timing, and loyalty benefits remain among the most effective ways to reduce airfare expenses in an increasingly dynamic market.
