Juergen Maier, Chair of Great British Energy, made his inaugural visit to the Morlais tidal energy substation located on Ynys Cybi (Holy Island), marking a significant step in understanding the project’s role in advancing renewable energy in Wales.
During his visit, Mr Maier toured the site and met with key personnel from the Morlais team, gaining insight into the progress achieved so far and the ambitious plans to expand tidal energy development both regionally and beyond. The visit also included a briefing on the Marine Characterisation Research Project (MCRP), which is collecting crucial environmental data to support the sustainable growth of the Morlais zone and future marine energy initiatives.
John Idris Jones, Chair of Menter Môn Morlais, expressed enthusiasm about the visit, stating, “We were delighted to welcome Juergen Maier to the site and to have the opportunity to share our progress and future plans. His interest in Morlais and the marine energy sector is a strong endorsement of the work being done here in Ynys Môn to drive forward renewable energy and innovation.”
Morlais, managed by Menter Môn Morlais Ltd—a subsidiary of the social enterprise Menter Môn—is one of Europe’s largest consented tidal energy projects. It is poised to play a vital role in helping Wales meet its net-zero emissions targets while fostering economic growth in the local community.
The project benefits from support and funding provided by the Welsh Government, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Ambition North Wales, and the Isle of Anglesey County Council. The visit also formed part of a roundtable discussion with key tidal energy stakeholders, coordinated by Marine Energy Wales, highlighting the collaborative effort to promote tidal power as a sustainable energy source.
