Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham has been awarded a vital grant of £474,950 from the Welsh Government, providing a much-needed financial boost to the organization. This funding forms part of a broader £5.5 million allocation aimed at supporting hospices throughout Wales, easing the financial pressures they face.

The hospice, known for providing 24/7 palliative and end-of-life care, said the grant would significantly alleviate the financial strain experienced over the past year.

Lauren Emberton, Chief Executive of Nightingale House Hospice, expressed her gratitude for the funding, calling it “a significant help” during a time of escalating costs.

“We are incredibly thankful to the Welsh Government for recognising the essential role that hospices play in our healthcare system. This grant has helped significantly towards the challenges we have faced at Nightingale House over the past year.”

Nightingale House Hospice is one of 12 commissioned providers in Wales but operates as an independent charity, relying on the local community to fund approximately 80% of its annual operating costs. The recent surge in operational costs has created extraordinary challenges, prompting calls for long-term solutions to safeguard these essential services.

Ms. Emberton explained the difficulties of keeping up with rising expenses:

“Whilst we work tirelessly to generate income through our shops, café, donations, grants, and fundraising events, the reality is that we are unable to keep pace with the soaring cost of living and the rising salary costs linked to the NHS Agenda for Change.”

In light of these difficulties, the hospice is actively engaging with the Welsh Government to establish “a more sustainable and fair” long-term funding model, according to Ms. Emberton:

“We urgently need a more sustainable and fair funding model, not only to continue delivering the outstanding care our community expects and deserves but also to expand and evolve our services for those who need them most in the future. We are in ongoing discussions with the Welsh Government to secure a new, fairer funding framework for hospices across Wales.”

Welsh Health Secretary Jeremy Miles has acknowledged the increasing pressures on hospices and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting their vital work in caring for families across the country.

Ms. Emberton also praised her team’s dedication and the community’s support:

“Our team of staff and volunteers go above and beyond every day to make sure our patients and their loved ones receive the care and support they need. Without them, and without the unwavering generosity of our community, we simply could not continue. This grant is an important step, and we remain hopeful that together we can secure the future of hospice care for generations to come.”
