Woman Waited 12 Hours for Ambulance in Wales, Highlighting Pressure on Emergency Services

A woman in Wales was left waiting for 12 hours for an ambulance, during which time she feared for her life, highlighting ongoing pressures faced by the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Jean Frickel, who tragically died at home, experienced a significant delay in receiving emergency medical assistance. Her family has said that ambulances were delayed because crews were unable to offload patients promptly at hospitals, reducing the availability of vehicles to respond to new emergency calls.
Jean’s daughter described the situation as devastating and emphasised that the delays were due to systemic issues within the healthcare system rather than the ambulance staff themselves.
The Welsh Ambulance Service has reported record demand, with some patients waiting over 30 hours for an ambulance in extreme cases. Despite investments exceeding £180 million aimed at improving patient flow and reducing hospital admissions, the service continues to face serious challenges.
Health officials and politicians are calling for urgent action to improve ambulance response times and hospital handover processes to prevent further tragedies.
This case has sparked renewed debate about the resilience of emergency services in Wales and the need for increased resources to meet growing demand.
