A young Welsh couple from Carmarthen has instantly captured the hearts of Race Across the World viewers during the fifth season premiere, with their candid discussions about love and resilience. Fin and Sioned, aged 18 and 19 during filming, not only secured second place in the opening leg but also navigated unexpected challenges, including managing Fin’s type one diabetes mid-race.
Their journey began at the Great Wall of China, part of a grueling 14,000km trek across Asia’s diverse landscapes, from China’s high-speed rail networks to Nepal’s mountains and India’s southern tip at Kanniyakumari. While racing through China’s Huanghuacheng village toward the Huangling checkpoint, Fin faced a critical health scare as his sugar levels plummeted, forcing an urgent stop for fast-acting glucose.
“I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was 11,” Fin revealed during the episode, adding that he initially concealed his condition from Sioned out of embarrassment. The couple’s openness about his diagnosis—including Sioned’s proactive role in managing his insulin injections—resonated deeply with audiences. “It’s making sure we plan ahead,” Sioned emphasized, while Fin humorously noted, “You’ve injected me in my bottom many times.”
Viewers quickly rallied behind the pair, flooding social media with praise for their authenticity and teamwork. “Fin and Sioned are literally the cutest,” one fan tweeted, while another shared affectionate screenshots captioned, “These two… Bless them. Oh to be young again.” The duo’s participation in the race, which prohibits smartphones and air travel while operating on a £1,140-per-person budget, highlights their determination to balance adventure with health management.
As the competition progresses through Nepal and India, Fin and Sioned’s story underscores the show’s broader themes of strategy and personal growth. Their ability to confront obstacles head-on—whether logistical or medical—has set them apart as fan favorites in a season already celebrated for its breathtaking scenery and intense rivalries.
