Lucas Roehrig faces Scottish champion Connal McDonald at the Copper Box Arena this Saturday in a pivotal bout for the 23-year-old cruiserweight prospect. The fight marks his tenth professional appearance and is being broadcast live on Sky Sports as part of the Zuffa Boxing 12 card. Roehrig views this contest as a critical opportunity to establish his status within the division.
The London-based fighter is eager to deliver a decisive performance against a well-regarded opponent. He described the upcoming match as a chance to make a significant statement in his career. “I’m looking forward to making a statement,” Roehrig said.
“It’s about an A-class performance and really putting on a show.
Respect for Scottish Rival
Roehrig acknowledges the quality of his opponent, Connal McDonald, who holds the Scottish title. He noted that McDonald defeated Scott Forrest in his most recent professional engagement. “He beat Scott Forrest in his last fight,” Roehrig observed.
“A good boxer, a good amateur pedigree, a good mover and someone that’s going to come to win, come to fight and that’s always exciting.
The prospect believes the bout will provide a dynamic and competitive atmosphere for fans. He anticipates that McDonald’s aggressive style will create opportunities for him to counter-attack. “He’s going to create openings for me,” Roehrig added.
“We want a live fight.
Groves’ Elite Mentorship
Roehrig is the first fighter trained by George Groves, a former WBA world champion and prominent figure in British boxing. Groves identified exceptional natural attributes in the young prospect during their initial interactions. “Some stuff which you can’t teach is: do you have speed and power – which he has in abundance,” Groves explained.
“He’s fun to train, he’s fun to be on the journey with, he’s going to be an exceptional fighter.
The former world champion emphasises the importance of mental fortitude in high-level competition. He has dedicated significant effort to developing Roehrig’s psychological resilience and focus. “It’s now really about your mental preparation,” Groves stated.
“Being on point all the time. I learned that the hard way in some ways.
Mental Toughness Training
Groves drew upon his own experiences, particularly his battle with James DeGale, to guide Roehrig’s mindset. He stressed the necessity of maintaining concentration throughout both the fight and the training camp. “I really trained the brain to stay switched on and concentrated for the full duration of the fight but also the full duration of a camp,” Groves said.
“It’s something that you do have to work on, you do have to develop and we’re doing it.
Roehrig confirmed that his trainer employs rigorous methods to test his mental limits. “There’s a lot of sessions where it’s physically hard, but the goal is to try and break me mentally,” Roehrig admitted. This approach aims to ensure he remains composed under extreme pressure during professional bouts.
Testing Limits with Opetaia
One of the most significant tests involved sparring with Jai Opetaia, widely regarded as the world’s best cruiserweight. This occurred before Roehrig had even completed his first professional fight. “To see how you can handle the pressure, if you’re going to crumble, if you’re going to complain,” Roehrig recalled.
“He pushed me and I didn’t fold.
The experience of facing such a dominant force helped Roehrig develop his composure. “It’s the aura that’s around someone like Opetaia, a big puncher, intense even for the sparring,” he noted. This early exposure to elite-level intensity has shaped his current confidence levels.
Roehrig believes his natural temperament allows him to remain steady in high-stakes situations. “I would say that’s something I naturally have where I don’t panic, I don’t ever get too high or too low,” he explained. “That’s what gives you the confidence on fight night.
He feels prepared to perform at his peak after enduring these rigorous preparatory challenges. “I’ve already been through the trenches, I can really flourish now,” Roehrig concluded. Fans can watch the full event live on Sky Sports this Saturday.
