Magomed Magomedov secured a split-decision victory over Lucas Gabriel in the main event of ONE Fight Night 49 at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium on Friday night. The 31-year-old Dagestani maintained his unblemished 15-0 professional record in his ONE Championship debut, overcoming a late surge from the Brazilian opponent.
Magomedov stepped into the cage with just two weeks’ notice after former world title challenger Alibeg Rasulov withdrew from the lightweight matchup due to injury. His opponent, Gabriel, entered the bout boasting an 11-1 record and an unbeaten run in the organisation, coming off a three-round win over former champion Ok Rae Yoon.
From the opening bell, Magomedov pursued his trademark wrestling pedigree, securing an early takedown to smother Gabriel from inside the guard. He mixed ground-and-pound strikes with various submission attempts, establishing immediate control over the pace of the contest.
The second round followed a similar script as Magomedov chased another early takedown. Although the 26-year-old Brazilian defended his scrambles more effectively, the Dagestani’s grappling attack appeared to wear down Gabriel’s confidence and physical stamina.
Gabriel eventually found his way back to his feet, cracking the ONE Championship newcomer with a head kick. Magomedov, with his head lowered, attempted another takedown but failed to secure it, suggesting the tide of the fight had seemingly shifted in the Brazilian’s favour.
In the third round, Gabriel came alive as Magomedov took him down yet again. The Brazilian turned the tables in the scramble, throwing elbows to the temple before securing a headlock and ramming knees into the Dagestani’s head.
Despite the pressure, Gabriel’s failed rear-naked choke and armbar attempts allowed the undefeated debutant to use his prized grappling skills to keep him out of further danger. When the final bell rang, the ringside judges faced a difficult decision on the outcome.
Ultimately, two of the judges sided with Magomedov, who defied all odds to earn the biggest win of his career. This victory places him firmly in the conversation for the ONE lightweight MMA world title.
Magomedov had every reason to turn down this fight, yet he now may have earned the right to challenge the division’s new champion, Tye Ruotolo, for the belt. The result cements his status as a top contender in the lightweight division.
The performance at Lumpinee Stadium highlights the high stakes of the ONE Championship roster. With his perfect record intact, Magomedov’s next move will be closely watched by fans and officials alike.
