Winter Fuel Payments surged to an estimated £3.1 million for 18,014 pensioners in Ceredigion during the 2025–26 winter, marking a near tenfold increase in recipients. This sharp rise follows the UK Government’s decision to restore payments to most pensioners, reversing eligibility restrictions introduced in 2024 that limited access to those on means-tested benefits.

Department for Work and Pensions data reveals the number of claimants in Ceredigion jumped from just 1,883 the previous winter to 18,014. The restoration of the scheme has significantly expanded the pool of eligible individuals across the county, reversing the previous narrow criteria.

Neighbouring Powys recorded 35,961 recipients, up from 3,467 the previous winter, with total payments reaching approximately £6.2 million. In Gwynedd, 25,852 pensioners received payments worth an estimated £4.6 million, compared with 3,356 recipients a year earlier.

The Gwynedd figures represent a 670 percent increase in claimants, highlighting the widespread impact of the policy change across north and mid Wales. Across the three counties combined, almost 80,000 pensioners received approximately £13.9 million in winter fuel support.

These figures were derived from DWP statistics published in September, with estimated totals calculated from the number of people receiving payments of £100, £150, £200 or £300. It is important to note that these amounts do not account for money subsequently recovered through taxation from higher-income pensioners.

Payments for this winter are now beginning, with people born on or before 27 June 1960 potentially eligible for between £100 and £300 depending on their age and circumstances. Most eligible pensioners will receive payments automatically during November or December, although some may need to submit a claim.
