Chacarra leads Race to Dubai as McIlroy chases record eighth title in Abu Dhabi
Eugenio Chacarra holds a 669-point lead over Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy as the DP World Tour play-offs begin in Abu Dhabi.
Eugenio Chacarra claims he is playing the “best golf of his career” as he seeks to retain the Race to Dubai lead ahead of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship. The Spaniard enters the DP World Tour play-offs with a 669.27-point advantage over Patrick Reed and a 999.03-point lead over Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy aims to secure a record-equalling eighth Order of Merit title, matching Colin Montgomerie’s historic benchmark. However, the Masters champion admits the challenge is significant, stating: “Eugenio [Chacarra] is playing well – that makes my job a bit harder going into the last two events.
Chacarra, who has won three events this season, expressed his ambition to join Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm as the only Spaniards to claim the Harry Vardon Trophy. He added: “Hopefully I can keep playing good, keep doing good, and I can put my name with Jon’s [Rahm] and Seve’s [Ballesteros], that would be a dream come true.
The Abu Dhabi event offers 1,500 Race to Dubai points, while the subsequent DP World Tour Championship in Dubai awards 2,000 points. Reed requires a share of second place in Abu Dhabi to maintain any realistic chance of reclaiming the top spot from Chacarra.
Several high-profile players, including Matt Fitzpatrick and Shane Lowry, have elected to sit out the Abu Dhabi event due to safety concerns regarding regional conflict. A DP World Tour spokesperson confirmed: “The Foreign Office has not issued advice against travel to the UAE so our situation remains the same.
