Swan at Cwmbran Boating Lake euthanised after 8mm ball bearings found lodged in neck
A swan at Cwmbran Boating Lake was euthanised after two 8mm ball bearings were discovered lodged in its neck. Wildlife rescuers from Swan Rescue South Wales believe the deliberate injuries, which included an open wound, were likely caused by a catapult. The bird was found in the paddle boat pond, where it had sustained severe trauma to its head and neck area.
Ros Eaton, a volunteer with Swan Rescue South Wales, stated the team received an initial call at approximately 8.30am. Peter Martin, also from the volunteer organisation, arrived at the site by 9am to assess the situation. He contacted Steve Hedley from Black Crow Paddleboarding for assistance, who promptly attended the location to help capture the injured bird safely.
The swan was successfully captured in the nearby play park and transported to a veterinary clinic for immediate examination. An X-ray revealed the presence of two 8mm ball bearings embedded in the bird’s neck, confirming the source of the severe injury. The veterinary assessment indicated the damage was extensive and life-threatening for the animal.
Ros Eaton explained that the vet informed the team the swan’s jaw had been “shattered,” rendering it unable to eat even if it had survived the initial trauma. She expressed deep distress over the outcome, stating: “There was nothing you could do.” I’m afraid we had to say goodbye to her.
The incident has prompted calls for public vigilance regarding the safety of local wildlife.
The recovered ball bearings have been handed over to Gwent Police for investigation into the deliberate act. Gwent Police have been contacted for further comment on the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
