West Yorkshire Police issues urgent home security warning over Euro cylinder lock vulnerabilities
West Yorkshire Police has issued urgent home security advice regarding Euro cylinder locks, warning that these common UPVC door fittings have become primary targets for sophisticated burglary methods. The force has assumed national leadership on this critical issue, collaborating closely with Secured by Design and major industry bodies to enhance residential protection standards across the UK.
Key partners in this initiative include the British Standards Institute, the Door & Hardware Federation, and the Master Locksmiths Association. Together, they are working to equip residents with the necessary knowledge to secure their properties against evolving criminal tactics that exploit standard lock vulnerabilities.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police stated: “There are now ways that you can reduce the opportunity for a euro-cylinder burglary to take place at your home. The force recommends that all residents aim to meet the TS 007 3-star standard as a minimum when upgrading their locks.
The force further noted that cylinders meeting the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312) are also recognised nationally for offering high levels of security. Residents are advised to consider these specific certifications when selecting replacement hardware to ensure maximum protection for their homes.
West Yorkshire Police added: “You may also be able to fit sash jammers to your doors, which have also proven to prevent burglaries. “It’s important that you check the warranty for your door first though, in order to ensure that the fitting of additional devices won’t negate it.
Residents are strongly encouraged to seek further personalised guidance from their local crime prevention officer. This direct support ensures that security upgrades are implemented correctly and effectively, minimising the risk of property crime in the community.
