Welshpool welcomes DB’s – a fresh independent shop on Church Street
Dawn Brown opens DB’s in Welshpool, offering varied clothing, footwear and handmade jewellery, aiming to fill a gap in the town centre’s retail mix.
Dawn Brown opened DB’s on Church Street in Welshpool on 17 August, offering a blend of men’s clothing, trainers, shoes, homeware, jewellery and children’s items. The new independent shop takes its name from Brown’s initials and is billed as a fresh alternative to the existing retail mix in the town centre.
Brown, who grew up in Welshpool before leaving at 18, returned to the area nine years ago after a spell living elsewhere. She says the town lacked a retailer that combined everyday wear with unique gift ideas, prompting her to fill the perceived gap.
“I thought it was something the town needed, something different to what we’ve already got,” she explained. Brown added, “I’m hoping that’s what I’ve got in, but I will be trying to change stock as much as possible to give people a variety.”
The shop’s shelves carry a wide range of products, from casual jackets and formal shoes to seasonal décor and handcrafted jewellery.
Among the items on display are pieces of jewellery that Brown creates herself, adding a personal touch to the retail offering. Motivation for the venture stemmed from a desire to return to work without the long, demanding hours she associated with previous roles.
“I wanted to get back into work, but not the rush, rush, rush, nine till ten o’clock at night,” she said. She continued, “I wanted to do something simple, a little bit more laid back.”
Before opening DB’s, Brown was a familiar face at Andrew’s Fish Bar and the Inglenook Café, where she built a local reputation.
After surveying several premises, she secured the Church Street location, describing it as the most suitable option. “This was the biggest shop that was available and it’s in a good location as well,” she noted.
More than a month after opening, Brown reports an overwhelmingly positive response from shoppers. “I’ve had a lot of positive feedback.”
I don’t think I’ve had anything that’s negative at all,” she remarked. She added, “Everybody that’s been in says I’ve got lovely stock and a good variety.”
They keep saying it’s what we need, so they keep coming back.”
Looking ahead, Brown hopes both residents and visitors will continue to stop by and discover the ever‑changing range. “I’m nice and bubbly, I’m friendly and I will have a chat with you,” she said, inviting customers to a relaxed shopping experience.
Local traders have welcomed the addition, noting that DB’s contributes to a more diverse retail landscape and may encourage further footfall on Church Street. The shop’s opening arrives at a time when Welshpool’s town centre is seeking revitalisation, and Brown’s emphasis on variety and personal service could set a new benchmark for independent retailers in the area.
