David Chadwick unanimously reselected as Lib Dem candidate
Liberal Democrat MP David Chadwick has secured unanimous backing to stand again for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe at the next general election, highlighting his local campaign record.
David Chadwick has been unanimously reselected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe at the next General Election. The decision was taken at a local selection meeting, where party members praised his two‑year record since first being elected in 2024.
Chadwick won the seat in the 2024 General Election, defeating the Conservatives and restoring Liberal Democrat representation in a constituency long contested between the two parties. Since entering Westminster he has served as the Liberal Democrats’ Wales spokesperson and sits on the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee.
In Parliament his contributions have centred on local concerns, ranging from rural infrastructure to health services. Among his early wins was securing a banking hub for Ystradgynlais, a move he says will boost financial inclusion for residents.
He has also worked with farmers to oppose the Family Farms Tax and campaigned successfully to overturn cuts to Winter Fuel Payments. Chadwick helped release pension funds previously withheld from former mineworkers, benefiting 151 former miners in his constituency and more than 4,000 across Wales.
Local businesses have received assistance navigating business‑rates re‑evaluations, a priority he highlighted during recent committee hearings. His pressure on housebuilder Persimmon led to a change in broadband policy, giving households greater choice of provider.
In Knighton he collaborated with residents to secure flood‑alleviation funding for Wylcwm Brook, addressing a long‑standing drainage issue. Healthcare has featured prominently in his agenda, with campaigns to protect cross‑border hospital access for Powys patients and to stop proposed cuts to community hospital beds and Minor Injury Units.
The next General Election must be held by 2029, and Chadwick says he is “delighted” to have the unanimous backing of local Liberal Democrat members. “Representing Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe in Parliament has been the greatest privilege of my life, and I am incredibly grateful to local members for putting their trust in me once again.”
When I was elected two years ago, I promised that I would work hard every single day to give our communities the strong voice in Westminster that they deserve. Since then, my team and I have completed more than 17,000 pieces of casework, while we’ve delivered real results on issues ranging from banking and broadband to flooding and former mineworkers’ pensions.
But there is still a huge amount of work to do. Too often rural communities like ours are forgotten about when decisions are made in Cardiff Bay and Westminster, and I am determined to keep fighting to change that.
The latest threat to cut hospital beds and Minor Injury Units across Powys shows we have a real fight on our hands. I will continue standing up for our community hospitals and fighting to make sure people in rural Wales have access to the healthcare they deserve.
I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together over the past two years, but I see this as only the beginning. I’m looking forward to continuing that work and, when the next General Election comes, asking people across Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe to put their trust in me once again.”
Chadwick’s campaign promises to build on his record of casework and local advocacy, positioning him as a familiar voice for rural Wales ahead of the forthcoming election.
